Before taking on her vital supporting role in Happy Valley, Siobhan Finneran was best known (in our house, at least) for playing Josie Phillips in Coronation Street (1989–90). Josie was one of the workers at Baldwin's Casuals – in the days when it made denim clothes, before it began specialising in underwear.
Finneran's "first major role" (according to Wikipedia) was as the first–named title character in Rita, Sue and Bob Too – a 1987 comedy–drama film which (also according to Wikipedia) "received a divisive reaction at the time of its release, but over time ... has become a cult hit for its depiction of working class life in [Thatcher's] Britain."
Rita's fellow 'babysitter' Sue was played by Michelle Holmes, who also went on to appear in Coronation Street – as the feisty barmaid Tina Fowler.
